Visual methods

Visual analysis is an interpretative approach rooted in theoretical and methodological traditions in the social sciences. It requires analytical sensitivity and an understanding of how meaning is constructed through images. This one-day course introduces key analytical approaches to visual data, including discourse and narrative analysis. It connects classical theoretical perspectives to contemporary (digital) visual culture, with a focus on how images produce meaning within social, cultural and technological contexts.

Core theoretical concepts are discussed, alongside questions of power, representation and interpretation. Participants will engage with visual materials to apply analytical approaches, translate visual analyses into research findings, and reflect on methodological choices, including how to select appropriate visual methods in relation to specific research questions and types of data. The course combines theoretical grounding with hands-on practice and provides a concise introduction to analysing visual material and integrating visual methods into social scientific research.
